Last week, I posted an article titled “Water and Brain Function” written by Merlin Hearn on my website. I was surprised with the number of people commenting and reading. I decided to post a new article on Water and Brain. In YouTube, I found 90 minutes video titled “Your Brain on Water” by Dr. Corinne Allen. I watched a few times and I found it very useful. I would like to share with you what I have noted key points in this video.
The Brain is 80% water. Optimal brain function depends on water and lots of it. Water is what keeps the brain signals going. When the quality of water is compromised the signals are short circuited. Water supports DNA and is the largest single source of energy. The brain has no way to store water and dehydration comes if all the water lost in a day is not replaced and this deficiency is accumulated. Brain cells need 2x more energy than other cells in the body. Water supplies energy. Nerve transmission consumes one-half of all the brain’s energy (nearly 10% of the whole body’s energy). When hydrated, you have more energy. When the brain is functioning on a full reserve of water, it will function at full capacity and you’ll think better and faster. What Causes of Dehydration?

The body uses 2.5 liters of water a day under perfect conditions
That is 9 glasses of water that need to be replenished
*Little to no fruits and vegetables in diet
*Acid water consumption (bottled waters)
*Digestion fluids not replaced
When dehydration occurs;
Dehydration occurs when the amount of water leaving the body is greater than the amount being taken in.
The body is very dynamic and always changing. This is especially true with water levels in the body.
Aging causes decreased thirst sensation resulting in dehydration
Alcohol consumption causes dehydration
Burn Cause Dehydration (When the body is burned it is forced to use a lot of water to heal)
Caffeine causes dehydration
Caffeine reduces melatonin needed for sleep
Decreases memory enzymes
Can cause DNA damage
Affects overall brain functioning
Cravings for caffeine are signal for needing water
10 ounces of coffee removes 12 ounces of water from the body
Diarrhea causes dehydration
Diets high in Processed fats, refined grains, chemicals, preservatives and sugar take more water to metabolize and flush out the toxins ingested.
Exercise causes dehydration. This includes mental and physical exercise. If you exercise regularly, you will need more than 2.5 liters a day (9 cups)
Fever causes dehydration
Edema means dehydration. When there is inflammation and edema the body pulls water from other parts to assist the area thus leading to dehydration.
High elevations cause lack of oxygen and use up a lot more water in the system
Infections cause dehydration. Infections are like contaminants or toxins in the body. They need to be flushed out and it takes more water to do so.
Chronic illness necessitates so much more water to flush the toxins that dehydration becomes the inevitable side effect
Morning sickness and nausea are a result of dehydration
Histamine is rising in morning sickness
The amount of hydration of the fetus will determine the future asset of the child’s growth and development
Overweight person should consume more water because it takes more water for the heavier person to complete the processes.
Dehydration decreases metabolic rate

Overweight person are confused for Hunger and thirst. Instead of drinking water, they choose to eat something
Sun exposure causes dehydration. The sun is burning up water during exposure and several hours after. During long exposures if carbonated, caffeinated, alcoholic, and sugar drinks are used the dehydration is far greater.
Sweating causes dehydration
Stress causes dehydration. Stress causes the body hormones and neurotransmitters to work harder. It uses up more vital resources that need water to keep functioning.
Using too much salt, especially salty junk foods causes dehydration
Vomiting causes dehydration
What are the dangers of dehydration?
Reducing water in the body as little as 5% can result in as much as 20-30% drop in your physical performance,
10% reduction can make you sick
20% reduction can mean death
1-2 % reduction in the brain can mean problems concentrating and thinking.
The average person drinks 16.000 gallons of water in a lifetime
75% of citizens in developed countries chronically dehydrated
1/3 of Americans have such a weak thirst sensation that it is mistaken for hunger thus obesity
What is Brain Dehydration?
Brings on feelings of depression & Anxiety
